The city was formally incorporated in 1991. Prior to that, the area was an unincorporated portion of Los Angeles County. Calabasas is located along Ventura Freeway/Highway 101 which leads to a fantastic drive through the Santa Monica Mountains toward Pepperdine University and the Pacific Ocean.
The name "Calabasas" means pumpkin, squash or gourd. The Chamber of Commerce hosts a "Pumpkin Festival" to celebrate fall and the City of Calabasas.
There are 12 K-12 schools in Calabasas, including 9 public schools and 3 private schools. There are 6 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 3 high schools and 2 preschools. Calabasas public schools belong to the Las Virgenes Unified School District, one of the highest ranked districts in the state.
